Trade chamber hail accord Spokesmen for two Apex Trade Chambers and the Joint Business Forum of Trade Chambers yesterday hailed the PA-JVP accord at an alliance that would lead to political stability and in turn to economic development. The president of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sri Lanka (FCCISL), Macky Hashim said in regard to the appointment of the five independent commissions. "It is indeed heartening that the Government and the JVP have agreed to the recommendation of the Joint Business Forum of Trade Chambers in terms of the establishment of the five independent commissions." "However, the need of the hour is economic development and the Government and the JVP must ensure that there are development projects which will ensure the steady flow of cash and the rotation of employment." Commenting on the current power crisis and the economic reforms program that the JVP had requested the Government to implement, Hashim said that it was mandatory for the coalition to go in for new thermal projects as a matter of utmost priority. The Secretary-General of the National Chamber of Commerce Neil Seneviratne, whose chamber provided the ground support for the Joint Business Forum, said: "It was indeed noteworthy that the PA and the JVP have reached an accord for the establishment of the five commissions which was a chamber proposal. "However, what is important is that the Government should accelerate the peace process which is mandatory for the economy to take off. What the JVP has said is they will not have peace talks for one year with the LTTE. It is important that peace talks are successfully negotiated so that economic development could be accelerated. This will ensure that there is accelerated development in all spheres of economic activity which includes tourism as well. |
