Mangala denies statement attributed to him SLFP Media Spokesman and MP Mangala Samaraweera has totally denied a statement attributed to him by the 'Divaina' yesterday, headlined, "PA will sack Ministers and MPs who dislike the accord." In a letter to the editor 'Divaina,' MP Samaraweera emphasises that the Divaina report was a complete distortion of what he said at Thursday's media briefing, in response to a question by a journalist. The question was, "Will you take disciplinary action regarding any member or Minister of your party if they do not agree to this program?" The SLFP media spokesman's clarification was, "We have what is called collective responsibility. After we take a decision, we are all in agreement with it, irrespective of whether we were present or not at the time the decision was taken. However, as Minister Nimal said, if there are those who do not agree with such decisions, as a democratic party, steps will be taken at that time to remove them from the party." MP Samaraweera, therefore, states that by focusing only on a part of his statement, the
news report concerned had distorted the meaning of what he stated, despite the
clarification. This distortion, according to him, is part of a media campaign carried out
by reactionary elements during the past several weeks to create friction within the SLFP. |
