OPA commeds Accord The Organisation of Professional Associations of Sri Lanka (OPA) yesterday commended the joint agreement signed between the PA and the JVP and said it should usher in long lasting political stability to the south if its contents are adhered to the letter by the PA Government. Elmo Perera Secretary of the OPA made this comment when he addressed a public meeting titled A way out of the present crisis at the OPA auditorium at Bauddhaloka Mawatha last evening. He said it was the view of the OPA that if the country were to move forward from the current political instability, a concrete programme like the one put forward by the JVP should be implemented in the south before anyone could think of ushering in stability to the North and East. The joint agreement signed between the PA and the JVP was a timely cause of action taken by both parties concerned at this critical juncture. The OPA does not have affiliations to any political party in this country, but we are hopeful that something drastic will come out for the people from this JVP-PA agreement during its one year duration. But we as members of the OPA would like to stress here that the importance of this joint agreement lies with the implementation of its proposals in a specific period of time or else it would appear to be a damp squib said Elmo Perera. He said the proposals underlined in the JVP-PA agreement would augur well if they are effectively implemented such as the formation of the five independent commissions as it is the public that stands to gain from this agreement. We must de-politicise all essential services including the public service, judiciary, elections, police and even the media both state and private. We as members of the OPA will keep our fingers crossed and watch from the sidelines as to whether the PA Government will implement the necessary proposals agreed with the JVP in the joint agreement during this period of one year. The OPA would like to call on every member of the public to be awake and vigilant at this crisis time in the country instead of being complacent and render their support to both the PA and the JVP to fulfil those proposals on behalf of the people explained Elmo Perera OPA Secretary. |
