DHL to expand local service coverage DHL Worldwide Express, a leading courier service provider in the world plans to expand its local service coverage in a bid to meet increasing demands of exporters, Country Manager, Chaminda Hewamallika said. "We need to move into the periphery in areas such as Avissawella and Wathupitiwala where many industrial parks and ventures have set up," he said. The Colombo office will focus more on reducing the transit time between Sri Lanka and other destinations in the region so that Sri Lankan exporters could have a competitive edge. In this context, we are also thinking of expanding our product portfolio to include specialised services such as logistics, warehousing and distribution, Mr. Hewamallika said. "We are now lobbying with the Customs and other authorities to facilitate faster movement of export goods. There are certain value and quantity restrictions. We need to convince the Customs authorities to relax these procedures in order that exporters can send their goods on time without much delay," he said. The garment and tea exports are the two biggest industries that use DHL services. The company launched a special service called 'Fashion First' to the garment sector early this year. "Fashion First is a specific product or a customised product offered to the garment exporters where we offer various types of packaging material and streamlined shipping documentation processing, faster customs clearance at destination points and an all inclusive price with a door-to-door service," he said. "We will also relocate our country office to provide more facilities and also a dedicated service for DHL customers," he said. |
