PA-JVP agree on 17th Amendment

The PA-JVP talks on the 17th Amendment to the Constitution to set up four Independent Commissions yesterday ended successfully, political sources told the Daily News yesterday.

UNP scuttling 17th amendment, alleges JVP

There is justifiable suspicion that the UNP is trying to block the passage of the 17th Amendment to the Constitution which will provide for the establishment of the establishing of independent Commission, says the leader of the JVP Parliamentary Group Wimal Weerawansa in a letter addressed to Leader of Opposition Ranil Wickremesinghe, yesterday. As evidence he refers to a speech of the Leader of the Opposition at Medagama in Bibile where he is reported to have said that the establishment of Commissions will not help the people to live.

LTTE has staged 66 suicide bombings in SL

As of September 16, 2001, LTTE terrorists have carried out an estimated 66 principal suicidal missions in Sri Lanka, of which ten were directed at prime economic targets, during the past few years, causing mayhem and havoc and claiming lives of thousands of civilians, the Special Media Information Centre said.

Vijaya Kumaratunga assassination: Non-summary proceedings on October 18

The non-summary proceedings into the assassination of film idol and leader of the Sri Lanka Mahajana Party Vijaya Kumaratunga will commence on October 18 before the Colombo Additional Magistrate Aruna Aluthge. Inspector R. Linton of the CID who appeared for the prosecution told court that Prof. M.S.L. Salgado, who performed the autopsy on Vijaya Kumaratunga had forwarded his postmortem report to Court.
