Minister expresses gratitude to airport personnel by Nadira Gunatilleke Aviation, Airport Development, Christian Religious Affairs and Tourism Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle speaking at the passing out parade of recruits to the security division of the Civil Aviation Training Centre in Ratmalana yesterday said, "we were able to open the Bandaranaike International Airport for foreign flights within twelve hours of the LTTE terrorist attack because of efficiency and commitment of Sri Lankan workers". Minister Fernandopulle said, airport security personnel are the very first to meet travellers, and a favourable first impression is most important. They should also be alert to possible attacks and should convey whatever information they get to the relevant authorities, without delay. "Above all, do not yield to corruption", said. "We have to pay special attention towards security measures. There is no need to recall the recent terrorist attack to our only International Airport. The disciplined training given to the sentrymen, sentry aids and fire fighters will help them to serve more effectively", the Minister said. A total of 61 trained sentrymen, sentry aids and fire fighters passed out yesterday. Special awards were presented to the highest scorers. Three batches presented a colourful drill display after the passing out parade. A demonstration of the training was also held. The Ministry's Secretary, W. P. S. Jayawardena, Senior Additional Secretary, S. Vithanage, Additional Secretaries of the Ministry Dharmasena and C. Warnakulasooriya, Director General, Civil Aviation, L. Liyanarachchi, Chairman, Civil Aviation, Airport and Aviation Sri Lanka Limited, Air Vice Marshal Anslem Peiris and the Board of Directors of the Company and several other officials were present. |
