Police refute TamilNet reports

The Government Information Department yesterday denied TamilNet reports which alleged that police had not taken action regarding two cases in Jaffna and in Eravur.

One news item carried by TamilNet on September 12, 2001, stated that "neither the police nor Judicial officials in Jaffna town have visited the site despite being informed of the discovery of human skulls, bones and saree".

Police Headquarters have informed the authorities that the Jaffna HQI sent an IP to the scene on September 11 to commence inquiries and the Magistrate, Jaffna visited the site on September 12 at 2.00 p.m.

Police have also denied a TamilNet report published on September 13 which stated that relatives of two boys who have been shot dead in Eravur had blamed the killings on the police. According to the TamilNet report, police have also issued an anonymous leaflet saying that the two youths were traitors.

The Information Department, quoting the Police Headquarters, said the Eravur OIC has recorded the statements of the fathers of the two deceased youths. They have vehemently denied the allegations purported to have been made against the police.
