Seventeenth Amendment before Parliament today by Ravi Ladduwahetty The Draft Bill for the 17th Amendment of the Constitution will be presented by Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake when Parliament meets at 10 am today. The 17th Amendment to the Constitution entails the establishment of the Constitutional Council and the independent Commissions for Public Service, Police, Judiciary and Elections. The vote on the Draft Bill will be at 7.30 pm. The Committee stages will be from 7.30 pm to 9 pm. President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has discussed the final clauses of the Draft with the Government Parliamentary Group last afternoon and had a meeting with the JVP which was still proceeding as this edition went to press, according to political sources. |
