LTTE kills child, severs ears

from Vasantha Chandrapala in Digamadulla

The LTTE shot a 14-year-old student dead and left his body with the ears severed in Maha Oya on Saturday last week, police reported yesterday.

The body was identified as a student of the Bubula Vidyalaya, in Maha Oya in the Ampara District. Reasons for the killing were immediately not known.

Meanwhile, the campaign of kidnapping young children for training and deployment continues apace, police said.

There are strong indications of a build-up of terrorist activity during past weeks and police are on alert for protecting vulnerable villages in the Amparai district.

Security forces have received information of LTTE plans for such an attack to commemorate the death anniversary of one of its heroes Thilipen on September 26. Posters with Thilipen's photograph have been pasted in Batticaloa and Akkaraipattu.

A group of children taken by force have been trained at camps in Thoppigala and Vakarai for these attacks, intelligence reports said. Small terrorist groups were reported to be roaming in the jungles of Shantimale, Unnachiya and Serawaltalawa. A security services source said military presence in these areas have been reinforced.
