I am writing in response to letters that appeared in your newspapers over the last couple of weeks. Specifically D. Cohomban Wickrema's letter (DN. Oct. 19) and Quintus Fernando's letter (DN. Oct. 22). The UK condemns terrorism in all its forms. The LTTE is a proscribed organisation in the UK under the Terrorism Act 2000. Anyone with information on terrorist fund-raising or any other terrorist activity in the UK should make it available to the authorities. The British Government has a fruitful and ongoing dialogue with the Government of Sri Lanka on countering terrorism. The UK is pleased that together with Sri Lanka, we were one of the first signatories to the 2000 UN Convention to Combat Terrorist Fund-raising. The UK continues to support fully the Sri Lankan Government's commitment to a negotiated settlement to the conflict in Sri Lanka as the best means of bringing a lasting peace. Any long-term solution will need to ensure the rights and aspirations of all communities and respect the territorial integrity of the country. These are matters for the people and government of Sri Lanka to decide through a process of dialogue and negotiation. ALISON KEMP The pensioners are grateful to President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga for the allowance of Rs. 750.00 per month granted from the month of October 2001. Majority of pensioners also got an increase of Rs. 900.00 during the year 2000. It should also be recalled that the allowance of Rs. 260.00 paid to the State Services employees were denied to the pensioners with effect from January 1988, by the then President. Although several appeals were made we were not fortunate enough to receive this allowance till June 1984. This was restored by President D.B. Wijetunga but no arrears were paid. The amount due was Rs. 19,000.00 from January 1988 up to May 1994. However, President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga paid this amount to the pensioners, at least in instalments, which was a great help to the poor and old pensioners. The Muslim pensioners will receive an additional amount of Rs. 1,500.00 during the month of November 2001. This will help the Muslim pensioners for the holy month of Ramazan. In view of the above facts what will be the duty of the pensioners at the forthcoming December 2001 polls? A.M.P., |
