SB seeks anticipatory bail

by Kumar Wethasinghe

Former Samurdhi Minister S. B. Dissanayake yesterday filed an application before the Supreme Court seeking interim relief to prevent the Commission to Investigate Allegation of Bribery or Corruption from questioning and recording a statement or taking any steps towards the arrest of the petitioner in connection with the alleged purchase of 8250,000 shares in the Pan Asia Bank by Samurdhi Authorities until the final hearing and determination of this application.

Through his counsel Samararatne Associates the petitioner had cited seven respondents including Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption its Chairman, Director General, Director Investigation and the members.

Among other matters the petitioner states that by letter dated 24-10-2001 the Bribery Commission had required the petitioner to be present at the Commission on 30-10-2001 and on 2-11-2001. He states that action of the respondents to continue the aforesaid investigation and summon the petitioner and record statements there is every likelihood that he would be arrested without lawful basis.
