Face to Face: Thuggery reaches climax - Gamini Lokuge by Jayantha Sri Nissanka Thuggery in Kesbewa has reached its climax in the recent past. Though election violence were not reported from Kesbewa during the past seven years election malpractices were reported in a larger scale. But people are with us. Therefore, we do not want to unleash thuggery. My followers are peacefully conducting the campaign. There was a Deputy Minister in Kesbewa. But he did not take any steps to develop the area. Today the roads are damaged. Not a single development project. People will decide his political future in this election. Poverty in Kesbewa has reached its ever high. There are about 2,400 acres of paddy fields. They were not cultivated during the last seven years. The number of illicit liquor breweries have increased in the area. There are over 60 such breweries. But police are not allowed to raid these places. Their hands are tied by an influential man in the area. Once we come to power after December 5, we will ensure freedom for the people in Kesbewa and measures will be taken to disperse organised gangs. We respond with language they understand - Chandana Kathriarachchi It is I who created a peaceful environment for the people in Kesbewa Electorate to cast their votes and elect representatives of their choice. There was not a single election malpractice occurred during the last General Election in Kesbewa. Gamini Lokuge is the one who did not allow the people to select their representatives of their choice. That is the story behind his going to Parliament three times. During the UNP period, an election was like a war in Kesbewa. But I changed that culture and did not allow him to repeat what he use to do. He used thugs who were aliens to the electorate to rigg the polls. I chased them away. I responded them in the language they understand and ensured the people a free environment to cast their votes. It is Lokuge who sat on the OIC's chair - not Kathriarachchi - and ordered to release a
suspect who was arrested in a murder case. But I have never influenced the Police
officials and never sat on the OIC's chair. |
