President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga said on Thursday that the hopes of her father and Shri Jawaharlal Nehru to create a peaceful world to the future generations, are being threatened today. Addressing a ceremony to mark the unveiling of a statue of Shri Jawaharlal Nehru at the Indian High Commission in Colombo, the President expressed her satisfaction for granting the opportunity to unveil the statue of the India's founding Premier who was a close friend of her father S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike. She recalled the occasion that she met Shri Nehru with her father when she was a child and said the two families maintained a close contact with each other. The President reminded the days she spent with the Gandhi family in India on the invitation of Shri Nehru's daughter Indira. We spent a couple of days enjoying the hospitality of the Nehru family, she said. Indira who had been following in the footsteps of her father by then was attempting to create a better life to the countrymen, she said. The Indian High Commissioner Gopal Krishna Gandhi expressed his satisfaction for being able to open a statue of Shri Nehru at the High Commission premises. Former Speaker Anura Bandaranaike, Sunethra Bandaranaike and Deputy Indian High Commissioner S. Tripati also participated. |
