Agriculture, Forestry, Food and Co-operative Development Minister D.M.Jayaratne states that information is available of a conspiracy by certain businessmen to create an artificial scarcity of essential consumer items during the election period and increase their prices as a political exigency. Addressing the opening ceremony of the 155th CWE Sales Centre at Ganemulla on November 14, the Minister said that in order to avert this situation, CWE will launch a special programme through CWE marketing centres countrywide to stock adequate supplies of rice and other essential items to last till the end of January next year. CWE has taken steps to provide such stocks to the retail centres. Minister Jayaratne also said that if such scarcities are created CWE will control prices by importing essential items, as the control of prices and distribution of commodities without a scarcity are the objectives of the CWE. He assured that under no circumstances will the CWE be privatised.
