Wijayasiri in Kandy The number of votes obtained by the UNP had declined by 100,000 at every election after Ranil Wickremesinghe took over the leadership of the party, Minister of Education and Higher Education Dr. Sarath Amunugama said. "In view of this, it is very clear that this time also the UNP will lose 300,000 votes at the forthcoming general election," added Minister Amunugama. He was hundred per cent sure that the PA would be getting not less than 8 seats (Members) from the Kandy District at this election. The Minster was addressing pocket meetings held at Kings Street Asgiriya, Bahirawakande, Aniwatte, Dodanwela, Mapanawatura, Katugastota, Poornawatte, Mahaiyawa, Wewelpitiya and several other places and large crowds participated in those meetings. Referring to the UNP candidate for Kandy District representing Kandy electorate Dr. Amunugama said that he would never gain entry into the Parliament because the people of Kandy would not like to be represented by those who lived at a very higher level beyond their reach. Dr. Amunugama added that so far he had never lost any election in his life and he would definitely win the Kandy seat on December 5 election. The education System in this country was an utter mess during the time Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe held the office of Education Minister, Schools were closed and Universities were closed. Children were on roads and some of them were brutally killed by security forces on the orders of the UNP government. Those children were protesting against the white paper on education presented by Ranil with the hidden objective of pruning the free education. A person who could not administer the office of education minister was now asking for the office of Prime Minister to administer the affairs of the country, which he could never handle. If the UNP was elected, it was Prabhakaran who would virtually be the ruler. The system of University Education would be streamlined so that those who become qualified to enter the Universities would be admitted within the shortest period of their becoming eligible. It would be the first time that such a program would be implemented in the world Dr. Amunugama added. Dr. Amunugama said that he was determined to make Kandy the most beautiful city in the island. SLMC Leader Rauf Hakeem was contesting Kandy under the UNP list while in the Eastern districts he was contesting under the SLMC. His determination was to establish a separate Muslim District in the East with the assistance of the UNP leadership. It was the duty and responsibility of Ranil Wickremesinghe to reveal to the country the agreement the UNP had entered into with the SLMC. Messrs Mahinda Jayawardene, candidate Wilson Kuruppuarachchi and several others also spoke.
