Reactionary forces brought about fall of govt. - Monty Gopallawa

by Galewala Group Correspondent

Reactionary forces mobilised by the UNP spending a large sum of money bought over MPs forcing to dissolve Parliament. That is why we had to hold this election spending a large sum, which was not wanted by people, Deputy Minister of Cultural Affairs Monty Gopallawa said.

He said at an election rally :

The voting population in Sri Lanka have to take a decision before casting their vote at the December 5th General Election, whether they would enable the big-shots to evade paying back the loans running into several hundred millions they had obtained with the support of the last UNP Government; or to pave the way for the recovery of such loans.

UNP and its supporters brought about the fall of the PA Government in order to protect those friends when the PA Government attempted to take legal action against them.

This election has been thrust on the people by UNP when its strategy to grab power misfired.

PA Government made arrangements to introduce several schemes to serve the people and to improve their lives; but instead of supporting UNP did everything to thwart those schemes.

When a group of Muslim Congress MPs led by Rauff Hakeem joined hands with the UNP the JVP extended its support to the Government under a package program and as a result several important measures were taken to serve the masses. Once again the reactionary forces mobilised by the UNP spent large sums of money and bought-over another group of ministers, deputy ministers and MPs and paved the way for the dissolution of the Parliament.

And as a result another General Election has come, which was not wanted by the people.

The UNP turned this country into a cemetery during their 17 years rule. Late President J. R. Jayawardhane promised to give 8 pounds of cereals at the 1977 General Election. When he was elected to power with five sixth majority he created a dictatorship and suppressed the rights of the people and enabled the local and foreign business circles to plunder the national wealth.

Concluding his speech the Deputy Minister appealed to the voters to support the PA at the next General Election to carry-forward the development programmes introduced by the PA Government to build a better life for the people.
