Fowzie "Those who want to have a UNP Government selected should get reminded of the scenes of the dead bodies burning on tyres on the main roads. If the PA failed to be victorious at the election, people can, once again, witness dead bodies burning on tyres. Like the night following the day the freedom now enjoyed by the people will be followed by a period of darkness and oppression. The greatest achievement of the PA Government is the restoration of democracy, freedom of expression, media freedom which were denied to the masses under the UNP administration". This was stated by A.H.M. Fowzie, Minister of Highways and Muslim Religious Affairs and the Chief PA Candidate for Colombo District when he addressed a PA election rally at Dehiwela. The PA candidate Jeyaratne Perera presided. Continuing his speech Minister Fowzie said, "Prior to 1994 the people were living in constant fear. If the son had gone for work and had not return home they had to hunt for him and sometimes even the dead bodies were not traceable. Today, the position is that if the son did not return home, the parents could relax for he is sure to return home after doing some extra work. If you want to have a life without such fears and tensions you must elect the PA and the choice is for the people". "The UNP is promising that it will bring down the prices of consumer items. It sounds like a fairytale. How can Ranil Wickremesinghe do it without increasing the local production and with a war in hand? That is why the President is giving priority to end the war and to establish peace". "How can Ranil Wickremesinghe who could not lead his list of candidates in Colombo claim to lead the nation? A handful of businessmen have been able to broker some of the PA members to join the UNP in desperation to defeat the Government". "The people, at this election, will have to select either a Government strong enough to defend the unitary nature of the country and democracy which is, no doubt, the PA Government or a Government of dictatorial tendencies, as has been experienced by the people prior to 1994, prepared to compromise the unitary nature of the country to divisive elements, which can be expected from a UNP government.
