Election violence

Thugs attack PA supporter's family

A gang of thugs employed by two former UNP parliamentarians had entered the home of a PA supporter in Medagama, Bibile and had fled after assaulting the inmates last Tuesday (13). A young woman, Sandhya Kumari of the family who were the victims of the assault, has been admitted to the Medagama hospital.

The reason for the assault is believed to be the donation made by the former Deputy Minister of Mahaveli Development Vijithamuni Soyza to a disabled child of the family.

People of the locality expressing their views on the assault said if a family receiving a donation for a disabled child was assaulted for getting such assistance, the fate of the people if a government dominated by UNP thugs came to power would be unimaginable.

Eye witnesses said that the two former UNP parliamentarians are harbouring about 100 men who had deserted the Forces in their homes and these men are seen roaming the area carrying unlicensed firearms.

PA candidate threatened

Chief Government Whip of the North Western Provincial Council, Kumara Keerthi Chandrasiri has complained to the Galgamuwa Police that on November 13th, when he was on his way to attend a meeting of the Youth Organization held at Samurdhi House, Galgamuwa, Galgamuwa UNP candidate, Indika Bandaranayake showed him a fire arm and threatened him. He also said that when he went to the Police Station to lodge a complaint regarding this matter, Indika Bandaranayake again obstructing his passage using vehicle No.62-5393 and threatening to kill him.

Galgamuwa SLFP Chief Organizer and PA candidate Bandula Basnayake commenting on the incident said that unknown armed groups are now roaming about in the Galgamuwa Town demanding undue support for the UNP and that he too has faced similar threats of murder and he has complained about this to the IGP and the President.

Internal UNP rivalry

Internal rivalry among the UNP activists seem to escalate according to party propaganda sources in the Matara District.

An armed gang of about 30 supporters led by UNP candidate Sagala Ratnayake who came in a blue van, a Prado jeep and a green cab are said to have set upon another group of election activists supporting the Matara UNP candidate Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena and independent groups. The gang had held out threats of murder saying that anybody other than Sagala Ratnayake engaging in propaganda work in the Deniyaya electorate must be prepared to face dire consequences.

The victim group led by Kotapola Pradeshiya Sabha UNP member Ravi Siriwardena and Matara District UNP Propaganda Officer Jayasena Atapattu are said to have complained to the Morawaka Police about this incident which took place on November 13th at Banagala Junction, Morawaka.

Further investigations are being conducted by the Morawaka Police.
