PA resurrected transport sector - A.H.M. Fowzie

The Government despite the war expenditure, has resurrected the transport sector at a cost of Rs. 8000 million to its present situation from absolute ruination during the UNP regime.

Road transport has been improved tremendously with the addition of 6000 buses over the last seven years and the railway services has also been upgraded with an expenditure of Rs. 2 billion. Trains have run on schedule and there have been new routes which have been added in both rail and road transport.

Express trains have also been added from Kurunegala and Gampaha to Colombo to supplement the services for the office commuters and services which had delays from 30 minutes to an hour, are arriving on schedule.

The road transport has also been buttressed with the addition of 800 new routes and 1400 routes which were closed during the UNP regime, have been reopened.

The Government has paid all EPF dues which have not been paid.

PA did only piecemeal tinkering - M.H. Mohamed

The PA Government has not had any coherent or consistent transport policy from 1994.

They have had no vision for the sector and this is indeed saddening. Everything has been done on a piecemeal basis and this has not been done consistently.

There is no policy. The private bus service is in a mess. The public bus services are also in absolute disorder. There is no proper planning.

Even if the number of bus services have been increased, they have not been streamlined and the services are in absolute chaos.

There is no relief to the commuters at all. Buses and trains are packed to capacity and there is no way that commuters could avail themselves of a comfortable service at all.

The commuters are further inconvenienced with possible price hikes all the time.
