Workshop on computerised database on abstracts of post graduate level studies

A workshop on establishing a computerised database on the abstracts of the postgraduate level studies on statistics of all Sri Lankan universities will be held on November 27 at the Janaki Hotel Colombo.

Heads of Statistics Departments of all universities will attend the workshop. Professor Ranjith Mendis, Chairman University Grants Commission will be the Chief Guest. Dr. Yameen Mazumder, the Planning Officer of UNICEF will also attend the meeting.

A large number of studies are done annually at postgraduate level programs in Statistics. Research projects covering many areas including Agriculture, Nutrition, Gender, Environment, Health, Education and Geographic Information Systems. Reports of these studies are not easily accessible as they are placed as hard copies in Universities all over the country. As a result of this limitation in access, similar studies are done repeatedly and also findings and recommendations of these studies are not utilised fully.

To overcome this limitation, the Applied Statistics Association of Sri Lanka under the patronage of UNICEF is working towards establishing a computerised database on the abstracts of the postgraduate level studies on statistics of all Universities of Sri Lanka. This database will include the name of the author, university, degree, year published, abstract of the study, key words and library catalogue number. Contents of the database will be published annually in hard copies and CDs. The research community and the planners will find this very useful as they can review the literature related to their studies in a very user friendly manner.

The Applied Statistics Association was founded in 1999 to promote and assist the advancement of Applied Statistics for furtherance of research, development, education and training. The members of the Association are professional Statisticians, holding responsible positions in various Universities, government departments, ministries, and banks etc. The association is working actively with various government departments and ministries promoting the correct use of statistics in their day-to-day decision-makings. Professor R. O. Thattil and Dr. S. Samitha of the University of Peradeniya are the current President and the Secretary, respectively of the Association.
