We publish a copy of the letter sent to ANCL by Attorney-at-Law Dhammika D Yapa, on behalf of Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena. My Ref G/001 I write on the instruction of my client Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena of No 555, Weligampitiya, Ja-ela, a candidate contesting the General Election from UNP/UNF for the District of Gampaha. I am instructed that Mr. Anura Bandaranayake a candidate contesting from Peoples Alliance for the District of Gampaha has caused to distribute a fabricated audiocassette at a meeting called by him today at Visumpaya. I am instructed that this cassette purportedly contains a fabricated conversation allegedly to be between my client and some persons identified by Mr. Anura Bandaranayake as being LTTE leaders. I am instructed to state that my client has never spoken with LTTE leaders and that this is a fabricated in a cheap attempt by Mr. Anura Bandaranayake to tarnish the image of my client and his party contesting from a rival party for the same election. I am also instructed that Mr. Anura Bandaranayake has held this press conference for the purpose of enabling the state media institutions to give publicity to this fabricated audio cassette. In the circumstances I am instructed to inform you that should you or your institution give publicity to this fabricated audio cassette my client will be taking legal steps against both the institution and each and every person responsible for tarnishing his image on the eve of this election. Yours faithfully |
