139 acres for landless persons President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has directed the release of 139 acres of land belonging to the National Livestock Development Board for the benefit of 1,316 persons who are landless, a PA media release said. This follows the repeated appeals made by PA organiser Gunasinghe Sooriyapperuma. By this scheme, the landless will get 89 acres from Ambewela farm and 50 acres from the New Zealand farm. Meanwhile, the UDA will undertake the biggest housing scheme in the Nuwara Eliya town which will also come up on 14 acres in Sadatenna area being allocated for the purpose. Dr. Shiran Deraniyagala retires Dr. Shiran Deraniyagala, the pioneer of prehistoric findings in South Asia retired from his post of Commissioner General of Archaeology with effect from November 15. Dr. Deraniyagala, who was an archaeological consultant assumed duties in that post on November 24, 1992 on the sudden demise of the former Commissioner General of Archaeology M.H.Sirisoma. Dr. Deraniyagala who was the Assistant Commissioner in charge of Archaeological Excavations since 1968 authored "The Pre-history of Sri Lanka" in two volumes wherein he asserted that in the light of research on archaeological excavations in different areas including the inner city of Anuradhapura, the written history of Sri Lanka extends beyond the advent of Arhat Mahinda and dates as far back as two to three centuries Before Christ. Dr. Deraniyagala intends to serve the Archaeological Department further as a consultant. Shakthi FM Radio better than Voice of Tigers In a cassette recording of an alleged conversation between Dr Jayalath Jayawardane of the UNP and Pottu Amman of the LTTE which was played by Minister Mangala Samaraweera at a press conference held at the Dept of Information yesterday for the benefit of the media, a salient point that was mentioned by Pottu Amman was that the "Shakthi" FM Radio of the Maharajah Organization was even better than the LTTE Radio "Voice of Tigers"! |
