says he would set up a youth army
by Rodney Martinesz UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said he would set up special job training programs for youth to take up employment out of the opportunities he would be creating under a new regime. He said these youth would be enlisted in the Youth Army 'Yovun Senankaya' that would be set up and paid a Rs. 2,000 monthly allowance during the training period. Addressing election rallies in Bandarawela, Wiyaluwa and Welimada, Wickremesinghe said he would undertake to develop the Uva region with tourism as a centre feature. By this, he proposes to create new jobs and put money in the hands of the youth. More money in circulation would stimulate the economy of the area. He would also arrange for the Bandarawela vegetable and fruit growers to sell their produce abroad with the necessary training imparted to obtain better yields. He would order investors to set up businesses in the area under the special incentive schemes, he would be offering them to halt the current economic slide. "R.M. Ratnayake was in a African capital with a parliament delegation which included Deputy Speaker Sarath Munasinghe and on their return the latter came over to the UNP". Wickremesinghe also disclosed the role of Ravindra Samaraweera who as "Hostel Master" looked later the accommodation of Opposition members during the run up to the No Confidence Motion. Finally, it was the combination of Upali Samaraweera and Lakshman Seneviratne who did the job of spies to find out government plans to attract Opposition MPs. Therefore Badulla District played no small role to the party in bringing down this government, he told the crowd. The President he said had no solution to the country's problems and as a diversionary tactic was talking about a UNP-LTTE link. He said, he would not to be surprised if in the coming days his name
would be linked even to the Taliban.Former Chief Opposition Whip W.T.M.
Lokubandra asked as to how the President could reconcile her statement
that it was she as the President who will be appointing the Cabinet of
Ministers after December 5th with the fact the Cabinet of 1994 was
appointed by her as the Prime Minister and not President D.B. Wijetunga
and that too with over a one vote majority in the House.
