can remember how UNP thugs reacted after '77 victory - Richard Pathirana
by Kahawa special correspondent "People are not dead and born to forget, how UNP thugs came in vehicles without number plates armed with bicycle chains, iron bars, kris-knives, duppies and sand bottles to assault political opponents after their '77 election victory", said Minister of Public Administration, Administrative Reforms, Home Affairs, Local Government and Southern Development Richard Pathirana speaking at the Kataluwa SLFP office addressing Ahangama, Kataluwa and Habaraduwa SLFP supporters. "The December 5 General Election is most decisive mainly for the Sinhala majority, because it is the date, the Sinhala majority will decide whether to hand over the North and Eastern provinces to Prabhakaran for a separate 'Eelam' state or not". "Therefore if you wish to live in harmony in a unitary state, enjoying the benefits of freedom and prosperity, you can vote for the PA, headed by President Chandrika Banaranaike Kumaratunga and if not, for the UNP headed by Ranil", he asserted. "Ranil who could never win an election before Chandrika with one 'elephant', has come forward this time with two elephants, and the first elephant is Ranil and the second is SB", he said amidst much laughter from the audience. The people of Habaraduwa the seat won by a majority of 10,000 at the last election should be praised and the people of Habaraduwa hoisting black-banners this time to protest Ranil's North-East policy are also praiseworthy", he said. The former MP for the Galle District, Nanda Gunasinghe said, "It was the UNP which unleashed the abusive politics on Sri Lanka since independence promising gentlemently politics. Sensible people condemn the UNP's ruthless attempts to disgrace President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga using filthy terms, as if they have no mothers and sisters at all," he said. "Such abusive remarks on public platforms is below the dignity of women-kind", he pointed out. Finally, he pleaded for the 72,000 Habaraduwa voters to vote for the PA. SPC member Mr. A. G. C. Piyasiri said, "whoever or whatever is
said, the masses are with the President".
