Ranil complains, says his spokesman

UNF media spokesman Prof. G. L. Peiris said yesterday that UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe had dispatched memorandum to the Heads of the US and British Government and the Chairman of the EU in connection with a statement by the President exhorting her supporters to exact "an eye for an eye" justice.

He said they aim to raise an international voice against the conduct of the President which is negation of the courts system, and of the threat to democracy.

Mr. Wickremesingh said, also filed a Fundamental Rights petition before the Supreme Court against the police raid carried out on his Melbourne Avenue office.

He said the new Government under the leadership of Ranil Wickremesinghe would also be taking steps to amend the Constitution to remove the immunity enjoyed by the President from litigation for her actions and conduct as a leader of a political party.

Prof. Peiris said the President who enjoys this immunity was today abusing her privilege to slander her opponents at election time.
