by Manjula Fernando

The team of European Union election observers said they were fully satisfied with the election preparation work by the Elections Department.

The Deputy Chief Observer Anders Eriksson said that they maintain close contacts with the elections officials, the police and political parties although they do not use any facilities from the government. The German Funding Agency GTZ is providing transport facilities and interpreters to the EU team.

They have posted observers who are already here to their stations islandwide including Jaffna. Six officers will be monitoring the pre- election process in Colombo.

The EU team has made arrangements to submit their preliminary report two days after the election (December 7) and according to the Deputy Chief Observer they expect to complete their final report before Christmas. Thirty more officers are expected to arrive next week.
