Twelve million go to polls today

Today's General Election promises to be one of the most keenly contested between the two principal parties- the PA and the UNP. The JVP is likely to emerge as a strong Third force.
President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga dissolved Parliament and called for a snap poll after her 10 month old Government lost its majority in Parliament on October 10 due to the defection of several government MPs to the Opposition in what could be termed a parliamentary conspiracy.
