Kandy police finalise security arrangements by Z. M. Razik in Kandy Police have finalised all security arrangements to ensure a trouble-free general election and to meet any post election crisis in the Kandy police division. Senior police officers have already visited several areas and have finalised security. Stringent security measures are to be imposed at various places in the divisions. Over 3,500 policemen and policewomen of all ranks including reservists and more than 200 police vehicles will be on duty on election day in the division under the direct supervision of Asoka Ratnaweera SSP Kandy division. SSP Ratnaweera said that there were 612 polling booths in the division. A senior gazetted officer will be in charge of each electorate. Over 100 armed mobile patrol units will be on duty from December 3. Several riot squads will be in readiness to meet any post election crisis. A large number of plainclothes policemen will be on duty before, during and after the election. They will be on duty in squads watching for trouble makers, said SSP Ratnaweera. An election secretariat, which is functioning at the Kandy police headquarters, will be shifted to Kandy Secretariat on December 3. Police radio network in and around Kandy has been strengthened with additional walkie-talkies.
