For the first time in the Sri Lankan political history a Buddhist monk, Baddegama Samitha Thera who contested under the Galle District PA list has been elected to Parliament.

Samitha Thera secured 42,120 preferencial votes. He was a member of the Southern Provincial Council.

The Thera is a senior member of the LSSP.
