Keep Police Election Secretariat open - PAFFREL

By Ranga Jayasuriya

People's Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) yesterday appealed to the DIG elections Gamini Navaratne to keep the Police Election Secretariat (PES) open at least for three months, when a group of their representatives met him, the Executive Director of PAFFREL Kingsley Rodrigo told the "Daily News".

Fifteen acts of murder and 511 other acts of violence were reported to the PAFFREL since December 5 election, he said.

Nine incidents were against UNP supporters and 16 are against the JVP. The rest were against PA activists and supporters, he said. Meanwhile the Presidential Secretariat sources said that 2,000 acts of post-election violence have been reported.

Claiming the cycle of violence was not yet under control, Rodrigo said the possible closure of the Police election secretariat would result in more violence.

We have asked for effective measures and more Police officers, he said. PAFFREL welcomed the idea to proclaim today (Jan. 1) the Brotherhood Day, but it will take some time to decide whether politicians are really committed for a change of existing confrontational and violent political culture, Rodrigo said.

PAFFREL is seeking a meeting with the President and the Prime Minister over the weekend and the JVP and the Army commander tomorrow to discuss matters regarding the post-election violence.
