Town Hall bomb blast: CID files further report

A further report on the Town Hall suicide assasination attempt on President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga was filed by the CID before the Colombo Chief Magistrate and Additional District Judge A.A. R. Heiyanthuduwa.

Investigators told court that the inquiry had not been completed and moved for the remand of the seven suspects till January 10, 2002.

The dossier of the investigation has already been forwarded to the Attorney General and a ruling on steps to be taken against the suspects now detained under the Prevention of Terrorisam Act was being awaited.

The seven suspects in custody are, Jeyantha Lawrence, Sinnah Gunasekeram alias Gune, Thangeswaran Regina Kumar, Ragupathy Sharwar Wasantha, Chandra Iyar Regan, V. Varatha Raja alias Udayan and Sathavel Ilayswaran. They were remanded till November 29.

The CID informed court that a woman Thangewaran Regina Kumar had made a confession in connection with the blast. Another Sivanarayan Pushparani who is wanted in connection with the blast had escaped to the operaional areas, the CID said.

Twenty six persons including Colombo DIG T.N. de Silva and four officers of the PSD died in the explosion. President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and ninety others were injured.

Further hearing was put off for January 10, 2002.
