South Asian officials agree to work on FTA KATHMANDU, Wednesday (AFP) - Foreign secretaries from South Asia Tuesday pledged to draw up plans for a regional Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by the end of the year. Ministers and officials meeting here ahead of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) summit to be held later this week also adopted a series of resolutions vowing cooperation on terrorism and welfare issues. "All South Asian foreign secretaries participated dealing comprehensively on various reports and the activities of SAARC," Nepal's foreign secretary Maduraman Acharya said. They decided to recommend to the Council of Foreign Ministers' meeting, which starts Wednesday, that the South Asian Free Trade Agreement (SAFTA) should be implemented at the earliest possible opportunity, he said. |
