Police recover firearms

Police have recovered 20 firearms, four hand grenades and 80 ammunition in search operations conducted in the Nickaweratiya Police division during the last two weeks.

Twenty three suspects were also taken into custody along with these firearms. "Yesterday alone, four suspects were arrested along with firearms and hand grenades," SSP Gamini Amarakoon told the Daily News yesterday.

The suspects had in their possession three firearms two hand grenades, one locally made bomb and live bullets.It has already been revealed that one of these four suspects was a former reserve Police officer.

SSP Amarakoon said investigations are now under way to ascertain whether these suspects had any involvement in the violence that took place in the area during the election period.
