FCCISL meets Jaffna business community

A senior delegation of Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sri Lanka (FCCISL) is now in Jaffna to meet the business community there in a bid to develop trade links between the North and the rest of the country.

The delegation led by FCCISL President, Mackey Hashim will hold discussions with the Jaffna business community including senior members of the Yalpanam Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Senior Government officials.

The FCCISL in a press release stated that the discussions would focus on facilitating two way trade and business between the North and the rest of the country, giving emphasis to explore possibilities of creating marketing opportunities for Jaffna's agricultural products including, grapes, tomatoes, bananas, onions, potatoes and vegetables.

"It is the view of FCCISL that the establishment of business to business contacts will strengthen the ongoing peace initiative and will also enhance confidence of the people of the North", the FCCISL press release said.

The Yalpanam Chamber which is affiliated to the FCCISL had informed FCCISL, that these agricultural products are available in large quantities in Jaffna and due to the lack of transport facilities they were not able to sell them.

The discussions will also focus on providing assistance to Small and Medium scale industries in the peninsula through SMED project, the technical arm of FCCISL. The assistance will include providing technical consultancy services to affected industries, providing market information, and facilitating sub-contracting arrangements.

Further assistance will be sought from the Friedrich Naumann Stiftung (FNST) which is a partner organisation of the FCCISL.

The FCCISL delegation in its visit will donate office equipment including computers, printers and fax machines to the Yalpanam Chamber.
