Lift ban on goods to uncleared areas immediately

The All Ceylon Hindu Congress (ACHC) has requested Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to lift the embargo on goods to the uncleared areas of the North 'immediately' to enable Hindus to celebrate the festival of Thai Pongal.

The scheduled date announced for lifting the embargo was January 15, a day after the Festival.

"It is believed that 'Thai Piranthal Valzhi Pirakkum' meaning 'with the dawning of the Tamil month of Thai, a way will also dawn' General Secretary of the Congress. Kandiah Neelakandan said in his letter. "Therefore your Government's decision to implement the lifting of the embargo before Thai Pongal will be a salutary move he said.

Copies of the letter were also faxed to Defence Minister Tilak Marapone, Rehabilitation and Resettlement of Refugee Minister Jayalath Jayawardena and Hindu Affairs Minister T. Maheswaran.
