Rs. 22.8 m to uplift hospitals and medical centres at Hambantota

by Kataragama group correspondent

Deputy Minister of Health, Sajith Premadasa said that Rs. 22.8 million will be spent to improve the condition of hospitals and medical centres in the Hambantota District.

He was speaking at a reception accorded to him at the public market, Tissamaharama under the patronage of the Southern Provincial Councillor, P. H. G. Lalchandra.

He said: "I am fortunate to come to the people of Hambantota district with Rs. 2.28 million Rupees as their Deputy Minister of Health within ten days of my assuming duties to remedy the shortcomings of hospitals and the medical centres of the district."

The deputy minister said that he expected to improve the health of the people with the cooperation of his minister. He and the Minister of Health got back Rs. 35 million that was returned to the treasury as the PA government did not utilize this money to promote the health facilities of the people.

He said: 'The reason for the present situation of the MPs and ministers of the PA is that they forget the masses and served only their henchmen. So the people have given them an unforgettable lesson this time."

The deputy minister said that some politicians think that the right to rule depends on being born to a feudal clan. That has been totally rejected by the people in the recent poll and they must understand violence and family dynasty cannot change the verdict of the people. The power comes through the power of the ballot not through the power of the bullet.

The major problem of the farmer and fishing communities in the Hambantota district is water. An accelerated program will be implemented to eliminate this after a discussion with Premier Ranil Wickremesinghe, said the deputy minister.

He said that he had a long way to go. His father Ranasinghe Premadasa never took his step back whatever obstacles came on his way and as his son he also follow the same policy and uplift the country.

Hambantota district parliamentarian Dilip Vedaarachchi and S.P.C. member P.H.G. Lalchandra also spoke.
