Cancer charity in London a great success The Roshan Wijesooriya Memorial Fund a public charity recognised by the Charity Commission in the United Kingdom recently held a raffle at the well-known "Prince of Ceylon" Restaurant in Hendar Central - North West London before a large gathering of well-wishers and supporters of the fund. An autographed pen donated by Prime Minister Tony Blair was also drawn amongst several other gifts. Earlier, this charity organised a dinner-dance to raise funds in aid of cancer related projects. They donated pounds sterling one thousand each to the Paul O'Gorman Fund for Children with Leukaemia, Great Ormund Sheet Children's Hospital - both of which are UK based charities and Sri Lanka's Cancer Hospital in Maharagama. The organiser of the Charity - Sriyani Soysa said that she was pleased with the progress made by the fund which is still in its infancy. She indicated that there will be more events in the pipeline that will raise larger sums of money towards the fight against the dreaded malady - Cancer. Bridge, a death trap The suspension bridge over the Mahaweli river on the Ginigathena-Wewelthalawa road in the Ambagamuwa Divisional Secretariat area in the Nuwara Eliya district is in a state of disrepair. All the wooden planks fixed on the bridge are decayed and as a result residents of the remote village of Wewelthalawa are compelled to cross the bridge by scaling its crossed iron strips risking their lives. Therefore the villagers appeal to the Ambagamuwa Divisional Secretary M. Sarath Premawansa to repair this bridge. Staircase at Sigiriya A staircase has emerged close to Sigiriya Lion's foot. According to the officials of the Sigiriya Cultural Triangle project it was an access road to the Singha Pada Maluwa. These ruins belong to the peirod of King Kassapa. The Cultural Triangle project has taken steps to conserve this area. Death fall K. Vidanapathirana of Oruthota Gampaha, a government servant (40) died after falling from a mango tree last Wednesday. This was revealed at the inquest on his death by R.K. Gunathilaka, Inquirer into Sudden Deaths, Siyne Korale East at the Watupitiwala Base hospital. The inquirer recorded a verdict of accidental death by falling from a tree. Nittambuwa police led evidence. Run over while sleeping under bus A person was run over by a bus under which he was sleeping at night under the influence of liquor. This was revealed at an inquest held at Eheliyagoda District Hospital by Kuruwiti Korale Palle Pattu Inquirer into Sudden Deaths, K.B.A. Seneviratna on the death of P.K. Premaratna Kaluarachchi of Digogedera in the Eheliyagoda Police area. The driver of the bus, Nimal Tilakaratne (24) said in evidence at the inquest, that on the day of the incident about 6.30 a.m. after the usual checking of the tyres of the bus, he started the engine and drove several feet. All of a sudden, the conductor Wickremasinghe shouted requesting him to stop the bus. When looking under the bus they saw that a person was run over by the bus. They immediately informed police. Indika Nishantha Kaluarachchi (27), the son of Premaratne said that his father was a liquor addict for a long time. He did not suspect any foul play. Eheliyagoda DMO, D.A. Seneviratna held the post-mortem examination. The inquirer recorded a verdict of accidental death due to severe skull damage. Eheliyagoda Police led evidence. Knocked down by speeding vehicle A father of six children aged 53 of Sahabanduwatta Denuwala, Weligama was knocked down by a speeding vehicle at Denuwala on the Galle-Matara main road. The victim was G. G. Nandipala, a fisherman by profession. The Inquirer into Sudden Deaths of Matara. H. B. Cyril de Silva who held the inquest at the Matara General Hospital recorded a verdict of accidental death. JMO Matara General Hospital Dr. L. B. M. Fernando performed the autopsy. At the inquest it was revealed that the vehicle had sped away.
