| News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | Breakdown of local bodies in NE by Trincomalee correspondent With the government's decision to hold Local Government elections in March, the Assistant Commissioners of Elections in the eight districts in the North East Province (NEP) are making arrangements to conduct elections for 61 Pradeshiya Sabhas, eight Urban Councils and two Municipal Councils in the NEP. In the Eastern Province there are three districts namely Ampara, Batticaloa and Trincomalee. In the north there are five districts, Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mannar, Mullaithivu and Vavuniya. In the Ampara district the number of Pradeshiya Sabhas are 14. There are two Urban Councils one hundred and fifty members would be elected for the 14 Pradeshiya Sabhas and 28 members for the two Urban Councils. The number of Pradeshiya Sabhas in the Batticaloa district are 10, one Municipal Council and one Urban Council. One hundred members would be elected to the Pradeshiya Sabhas, 19 members for the Batticaloa Municipal Council and nine members of the Kattankudy Urban Council. Trincomalee district consist of 10 Pradeshiya Sabhas and one Urban Council. 94 members will be elected for the ten Pradeshiya Sabhas and 12 members for the Trincomalee Urban Council. Jaffna district consist of 12 Pradeshiya Sabhas, three Urban Councils and one Municipal Council. The number of members to be elected for the 12 Pradeshiya Sabhas are 173. Chavakachcheri, Point Pedro and Valvettithurai Urban Councils would elect 29 members and the number of members to be elected for the Jaffna Municipal Council would be 23. Kilinochchi district has three Pradeshiya Sabhas with 38 members, Mannar district consists of four Pradeshiya Sabhas with 44 members, Mullaithivu district has four Pradeshiya Sabhas and 38 members are to be elected. Vavuniya district has four Pradeshiya Sabhas and one Urban Council. The four Pradeshiya Sabhas would elect 41 members and the number of members to be elected for the Vavuniya Urban Council would be 11. |
