India name three spinners in one-day squad

BANGALORE, India, Monday (Reuters) - India named three specialist spinners on Sunday in a 14-man squad for the first three matches of a six-game one-day series against England starting next Saturday.

Saurav Ganguly was retained as skipper of a squad that includes leg-spinner Anil Kumble and off-spinners Harbhajan Singh and Sharandeep Singh.

Chairman of selectors Chandu Borde said three spinners had been picked to add variety to the attack.

"When we see the wicket for the matches probably only two spinners will play," Borde said. "But we wanted to have more options."

He said the squad had only been named for the first three games so that the new players could be assessed.

"We want to see the team in action and watch them play," Borde added. "Once they have been tested, we will decide the team for the next three games."

Eight players who left out who were part of a 15-man squad which lost in the final of a one-day tournament involving Kenya and hosts South Africa at the end of last year.

Vangipurappu Laxman, who missed the South Africa series with a knee injury, returns along with left-handed batsman Hemang Badani, middle-order Dinesh Mongia, and left-arm paceman Zaheer Khan.

All-rounder Sanjay Bangar is named for his first one-day series, while young wicketkeeper Ajay Ratra has been picked ahead of Deep Dasgupta.

"After watching the recent domestic matches, we feel Ratra is a better choice for one-day cricket," Borde said.

Dasgupta had scored a hundred in the recent test series against England, which India won 1-0, but had made several errors behind the wicket with the gloves.

The first game is at Calcutta's Eden Gardens.

Squad: Saurav Ganguly (captain), Sachin Tendulkar, Vangipurappu Laxman, Virender Sehwag, Hemang Badani, Dinesh Mongia, Anil Kumble, Ajay Ratra (wicketkeeper), Harbhajan Singh, Sharandeep Singh, Javagal Srinath, Ajit Agarkar, Zaheer Khan, Sanjay Bangar.
