by Ranil Wijayapala A four member committee headed by retired Appeal Court Judge, Mr. O. W. O. B. Weerasena has been appointed by Transport Minister, Tilak Marapone to probe Sunday's train mishap in Rambukkana, State Transport Minister, Piyasoma Upali said yesterday. The committee will comprise Dr. T. A. Piyasiri and Prof. W. M. Karunadasa of the Moratuwa University and Mr. J. W. Chandrasekera. The preliminary report by the Minor Board of the Railway Department completed by yesterday will facilitate the investigations of the committee appointed by the Transport Ministry. Minister Upali said the committee will hear the evidence of the railway officials, workers, the public and experts in rail transport. Apart from the committee appointed by the Ministry a three member committee appointed by the Major Board of the Railway Department will also commence investigations into the incident at department level. The Minister said the probe by the Committee will be completed soon to take prompt action against the persons responsible. General Manager of Railways, Priyal de Silva said precautions have been taken to prevent such incidents in the future. Engine drivers have been instructed to check defects in train before operation. In addition, trip charts will also be given to engine drivers to note defects occurring during operations. |
