'Dead' man rises again in northern India: report

NEW DELHI, Jan 15 (AFP) - A "dead" man shocked relatives and doctors in the northern Indian city of Lucknow when he suddenly came alive just minutes before he was to be taken for cremation, a report said Tuesday.

Sukhlal Gautam, 55, was admitted to a government hospital suffering from tuberculosis on December 29 last year but declared dead and shifted to a mortuary 14 days later, the Hindustan Times said.

"We soon started making arrangements for the funeral," Gautam's son, Guddu (eds: one name).

"(But) when we brought the body out from the mortuary and started to load it onto the vehicle, my father gasped for breath."

According to the report, he spent eight hours lying in the mortuary as a "dead" man before his revival.

The doctor-on-duty was called immediately and Sukhlal was re-admitted to the hospital. Hospital staff also took back the death certifcate issued to the relatives.

The report said the incident has been taken very seriously by the hospital and chief medical officer H.P. Kumar will begin a thorough inquiry.

"The carelessness cannot be ignored and the guilty will be punished," Kumar said.

According to latest reports, Sukhlal is back on the same hospital bed and, although in a serious condition, is alive.
