Free flow of goods to uncleared areas in the Vanni resumed on Tuesday with the Government lifting the ban on a majority of items following the announcement of a cessation of hostilities recently. Here people line the road as a convoy of lorries laden with goods from Vavuniya and bearing the Red Cross emblem pass through Piramanalakulam towards the interior of the Vanni. 

Government to extend cessation of hostilities

The Government will extend the cessation of hostilities after January 24 and expects that the LTTE will also follow-suit, Cabinet spokesman and Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris said yesterday.He did not divulge a specific time frame for the extension of the cessation of hostilities but said the Government wants to continue until a firm foundation is laid for talks.

Vehicles permitted to enter Vanni

The Government has decided to permit all registered vehicles to enter the uncleared areas in the Vanni. The vehicles could enter through the Piramanalankulam security check point after producing the necessary documents, Government Agent in Vavuniya K. Ganesh said.
