Thousands join peace march to Vanni

Around 3000 people from all parts of the country visited the Vanni yesterday to meet LTTE leaders and to extend their support to the peace process.

The group commenced their journey from Sama Viharaya, Anuradhapura by 20 buses and several private vans. Representatives of the organisation of the relatives of servicemen missing in action, Sama Sevaya and several NGOs also went with the group.

The group had planned to visit Madhu church and perform religious activities yesterday, before crossing over to the LTTE-controlled area. According to the President of the organisation of the relatives of servicemen missing in action E.V.Nanayakkara, the aim of the journey was pressurising the LTTE to continue the peace process and securing the release the soldiers in LTTE custody.

"Exchanging Prisoners of War is an initial step in a peace process in any part of the world. Therefore, this task should be given priority," he said.

The group will meet Tiger leaders at Mallawi. Anuradhapura Sama Viharadhipathi Ven. Mahavilachchiye Wimala Thera, other members of the Maha sangha and the clergy of other religions also participated in this journey.
