by Wasantha Ramanayake The Court of Appeal Friday fixed the appeal in the Rs. 20 million extortion case for argument for May 13 to 17. The bench comprised the Justices Raja Fernando and Gamini Amaratunga. Accused Parakrama Gunathilaka, Ruwan Kumara Ranasinghe, Kaluarchchige Anil, Victor Ranthilaka, Kapila Kumaratunga, D. M. Herath Banda, Pradeep Janaka, T. K. Nelson, H. Senarath, Chaminda Sisira Kumara, H. Sumangala, Asanka Priyankara Perera and Rohana Ajith Kumara have appealed against the Colombo High Court Judgment which convicted and sentenced them on December 06. Earlier, the Attorney General had indicted fifteen accused on 46 counts in connection with the abduction of a company director G. C. Wickremasinghe and collection of a ransom money of Rs. 20 million on March 30, 1999. They were further charged with conspiring to commit the abduction of G. C. Wickremasinghe and extortion and retaining illegal property. The Accused have filed the appeal seeking to set aside the verdict, conviction and sentence imposed on them, make order acquitting them, permit the appeal against sentence which claimed to be manifestively excessive. Ranjith Abeysuriya PC, Dr. Ranjith Fernando and Dulinda Weerasuriya appeared for the accused. Deputy Solicitor General C. R. de Silva PC with Senior State Counsel P. P. Surasena appeared for the state. The argument was fixed for May 13. |
