Former Dinamina Editor dies

Mr. M. A. de Silva, a leading figure in the Print Media, one time Dinamina Editor (1960-1964) and the first Editor of Lanka Puvath, the Sri Lanka National News Agency and also a former member of the Sri Lanka Press Council, died in the early hours of Saturday. Funeral will be on Monday January 21 (today) at Pothuhera, Kurunegala. His remains are now lying at Jerry Waidyasekera, his brother's house Colombo Road, Pothuhera.

Death of former Daily News staffer

I. A. Sangadasa, formerly of Daily News Editorial died on Friday. Sangadasa was 72 years of age at the time of his death.

Sangadasa was a working journalist in the 'Daily Mirror' at the time of his death. He leaves Chitra Batagoda, his wife and four children. He is the father of Sepali Pathirana of Observer Advertising Department and father-in-law of Sumith Pathirana of the Accounts Department, ANCL.

Funeral will take place at 4.00 p.m. today (21).

Body lies at No. 6, HPT Housing Scheme, Katuwana Road, Homagama.

Death of Daily News staffer's mother

The death occurred on Saturday of Mrs. Lourdes Pushpam Douglas (78), wife of the late John Douglas, formerly of Colombo Gas and Water Company.

She is the mother of 'Daily News' sub-editor Therese Douglas. She also leaves behind Anne (Aloysius Seminary Colombo), Rachel (St. Joseph's College Colombo), Emilda (AELT Colombo), Pius (Sporting Star), Vaz (Customs), Dorothy (Creative Services), Dunstan (Shell Gas Lanka Ltd), Nonita (Germany) and Pradeep (Jeff Engineering). She is the grand mother of Aroshan Kirk of (Aitken Spence) who edits the Daily Observer music page.

The funeral will take place today (January 21) at Kanatte, Borella (RC) family burial grounds. Cortege leaves residence at 879, Vihara Mawatha, Tewatte, Ragama.

Fined

Trincomalee Magistrate and Additional District Judge S. Thayagendra at the Kantale circuit court imposed a fine of Rs. 41,000 in default twelve months simple imprisonment on A. P. Dayananda of Kantale for possession of 360 drams of unlawfully distilled liquor.

The accused pleaded guilty and also admitted five previous convictions. Attorney for the accused brought to the notice of court that the accused is a disabled person. Kantale police prosecuted.

Pongal celebrated on low key

Thousands of plantation workers celebrated their Pongal festival with a low but religious keynote due to the sudden price hike of rice, coconuts and other essential items.

A kilo of red rice is being sold at Rs. 40 per kilo and coconuts at Rs. 17.00 per nut.

The traders have hidden large stocks of rice and other food items, which they brought to the open market during the festivities.

Flour too has shot up in price which the plantation workers mainly depend on for their mid-day meal.

Kaduwela Electorate felicitates MPs

A ceremony to felicitate the newly elected Members of Parliament from the Kaduwela Electorate was held on January 15th at the Auditorium of Kaduwela Divisional Secretariat, Malabe under the patronage of Divisional Secretary P. H. L. Wimalasiri Perera.

Addressing the gathering, Human Resources Development, Education and Cultural Affairs Minister Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku thanked the convenors for inviting him and other MPs for the occasion and stated that vengeance and thuggery is not the culture of the present Government that received a massive public mandate at the last General Election. He said that as public servants surviving by public funds we must serve the people and uplift their living conditions by utilizing the available material resources to the maximum.
