Bangladesh tightens watch on U.S. offices, border DHAKA, Jan 23 (Reuters) - Bangladesh said on Wednesday it has tightened security around the U.S. embassy and American buildings as well as along its border with India after an attack on the U.S. cultural centre in its neighbour's city of Calcutta. "We have reinforced security around the American buildings, including its embassy in Dhaka," said a senior police officer. U.S. officials were not immediately available for comment. Tuesday's attack in the eastern Indian city left at least four people dead and 20 wounded. "Vigilance along our border with India, particularly with India's West Bengal state, has been reinforced," said an officer with the paramilitary border force, the Bangladesh Rifles. He added, however, "This is part of usual security norms and practices...and not directly linked to the Calcutta incident." He said he had no information to confirm newspaper reports in Dhaka that India had sealed its border with Bangladesh after the shootout. "We have no report or evidence of any unusual or extra Indian activities along the border," he told Reuters. Bangladesh has condemned the attack on the U.S. cultural centre, saying it stands firmly against terrorist activities. |
