Sinhala citizens should support Government's peace efforts - Thamil Chelvam

by Victor Marambage

If all the citizens of Sri Lanka, specially the Sinhala citizens support the Governments peace efforts, a tangible and a long lasting peace could be achieved, S.P. Thamil Chelvam, leader of the Political Wing of the L.T.T.E. told the Peace Representatives from the South, at the Auditorium of the L.T.T.E. at Kilinochchi.

"The leader of the L.T.T.E. Velupillai Prabhakaran has pledged his fullest support to the peace moves of the government in resolving the crisis that is killing people and destroying property. We respect the freedom and safety of the people of the South. We also expect these be adhered to by them in respect of the people of the North. For this the Sinhala and all others in the South should assist the government in attaining a peaceful settlement," he added.

"The Sinhala Civil Society in association with all other Nationals are fully pledged for a peaceful settlement of the existing ethnic problem. They respect and adhere to our call for peace.

The Sinhala citizens hope and pray that the L.T.T.E. will come to a peaceful settlement through bi-lateral talks. It will pave way for a unitary state second to none, where Sinhala and Tamil live side by side respecting each other but with the Tamils too having right for their own decisions, Mr. Samson Jayasinghe, National Secretary Samasevaya said.

The L.T.T.E. representatives requested the Peace Delegates from the South to urge the government to release 10 L.T.T.E. detainees as they have released ten from detention.

The Peace delegates presented Greetings Cards with their signatures hailing the peace efforts of the L.T.T.E., to the representatives. The Peoples Peace Front (P.P.F.) handed over a 100-page progress report to the L.T.T.E., showing a resume of its Peace Programmes in association with other peace movements. The Peace delegates thanked the L.T.T.E. for their safety, comfort, warm welcome and the willingness to enter peace talks.

Rev. Fr. Oswald B. Firth (Centre for Society And Religion) Samson Jayasinghe (Samasevaya) S.P. Nathan (Peoples' Peace Front) Ajith Rupasinghe (Prasanni) E.V. Nanayakkara and Mrs. Vishaka Dharmadasa were among the delegates.
