Walk carries AIDS warning by Nadira Gunatilleke The district Rotaract Organisation of Rotary International District 3220 Sri Lanka, is conducting an AIDS awareness campaign with the assistance of Rotary Clubs, Interact Clubs, UNAIDS, the National STD/AIDS Control Program, UNICEF, Save the Children Norway and other donor organisations. Activities will be organised in Colombo, Kandy and Trincomalee to publicise and create awareness of the AIDS virus. Under this program series, an AIDS awareness walk with more than 1500 youth in attendance will be held on January 26 at 8.30 am with the support of the Interact district and UNICEF. The walk will start at Bishop's College and progress Via Bambalapitiya junction to Dickman's Road, to end at Police Park. Two other walks will also be held in Trincomalee on January 26 and in Kandy on February 16. Banners, pennants and posters will be displayed in and around Colombo, Galle, Kandy and Trincomalee. The red ribbon, the International symbol of AIDS awareness will be made available to the public during the AIDs awareness walk and other awareness programs. Red ribbons and condoms will be distributed in nightclubs to promote safe sex on January 26. A dance called "The Virus" will be staged in February. 40,000 informative leaflets on AIDS education and prevention will be circulated among the public. Discussions and information programs will be held at schools, universities and factories supported and assisted by doctors from the STD/AIDS control program. Certificates and awards were presented to the winners of the Island-wide AIDS slogan writing competition for children, teenagers and adults held recently. |
