Appointed CLEA Vice President

At the Commonwealth Legal Education Association (CLEA) held in Colombo last year, Dr. H. J. F. Silva, Principal Sri Lanka Law College was elected the Vice President of the Association. He was also appointed as the co-ordinator for South Asia.

The Sri Lanka Law College now will be in a position to play a lead role in the field of legal education in South Asian Region which for the purpose of CLEA includes Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. 

N/E elections postponed

Local Government elections in the North and East except the Digamadulla electorate have been postponed, the Daily News learnt.

Accident rate down

The accident rate in Wadduwa Police area has decreased when compared with the year 2000.

According to the statistics submitted by Sgt. Upasena Ranchagoda O.I.C. Traffic Unit of Wadduwa Police there were 239 accidents in the year 2001 but in the year 2000 the rate was 307 accidents.

There were also 15 total accidents in the year 2001 but in 2000 the fatal accidents were 18.

The Wadduwa Police has collected Rs. 113,500 from the drivers who violated traffic laws in the year 2001.

The Police has also collected Rs. 315,000 by means of minor traffic offences and there were 3,551 offences.

Clean up at Sri Pada

The Sri Lanka Saukyadana Movement has organised a Sramadana campaign to clean up the surrounding environment of the Sri Pada on Friday January 25.

President of the Movements Publicity and Media Committee Daya Sri Narendra Rajapakse said 500 Saukyadana volunteers will participate in the campaign which will begin at 8 a.m. and conclude at 5 p.m.

Two charged for theft of bus

An ex-reserve sub inspector of police and his friend were charged by the Kandy police on Monday with theft of a Tata bus worth Rs. one million.

The two accused of Walapone and Kandy are charged with the theft of a Tata bus worth Rs. 10 lakhs belonging to a businessman of Kandy and retaining the stolen bus on August 15 last year.

The accused who are on Rs. 25,000 personal bail each, pleaded not guilty to both charges.

Sergeant M. G. Gunasena of Kandy crimes informed court that the owner of the bus had parked the bus around 7.30 pm opposite his shop on the Peradeniya road and had found it stolen around 12 midnight. The bus and the accused were taken into custody around 2 am at the police checkpoint near Heerassagala Road - William Gopallawa Mawatha junction.

Kandy Magistrate C. V. Rajapakse before whom plaint was filed, fixed the case for inquiry on March 11 and directed the accused and complainant to appear in court on the inquiry date.

Water cut in Colombo

Water supply to the following areas will be interrupted for 8 hours with effect from 9.00 p.m. on 26 January to 5.00 a.m on January 27 National Water Supply and Drainage Board announced.

Affected areas:

Fort, Slave Island, Sir Chittampalam A. Gardiner Mawatha, D. R. Wijewardana Mawatha, T. B. Jayah Mawatha, Deans Road and Vavxhall Street.
