Loganathan addressing the fifth annual general meeting of the Trincomalee district branch held at St. Zaviour's MV said that his trade union condemns the communal policies of the JVP which has no right to speak on behalf of the Tamil people and the LTTE. He appealed to the people of the North East Province not to allow JVP to engage in political activities in the province as the JVP should be ousted from the North East Province. He said some mischievous elements are engaged in thwarting the peace process of the UNF government. People of Sri Lanka have overwhelmingly given a mandate for peace at the last general election. The UNF has a responsibility to find a political solution to the Tamil national question through talks with the LTTE who have been accepted as the sole representative of the Tamils in the North East. He said prior to the proposed talks between Government and LTTE the ban on LTTE in Sri Lanka should be lifted by the Government. Tamil National Alliance leader in Trincomalee K. Thurairatnasingham who deputized for the Trincomalee district MP R. Sampanthan said that the majority of the Sinhalese people in the south has rejected chauvinism in 1994 and 2001 general elections. In 1994 general election chauvinist elements in the South with 'Pottu' on the forehead of Chandrika's poster alleged that Chandrika was going to give everything to the Tamils if she came to power. Likewise in 2001 general election the same chauvinist elements conducted propaganda in the south that the UNP and LTTE were having a secret pact. At both elections majority of the Sinhalese elected governments which said that they would talk to the LTTE to bring peace and permanent and amiable political solution to the country. People in the South are getting frustrated by the communal policies engineered by some of the chauvinist leaders Mr. Thurairatnasingham said. |
